Day 2 - Litchfield to Cooinda via Pine Creek & Kakadu Highway

We start the day the Ethical Adventures way — a relaxed, home-style breakfast at Litchfield Outback Resort, fuelling up before rolling south along the iconic Stuart Highway. This legendary road isn’t just a strip of bitumen — it’s a timeline of Territory grit, stories and survival.

Our first stop is the historic gold-mining town of Pine Creek, where we stretch the legs, enjoy a comfort stop, and take a wander through the local car museum — a quirky, nostalgic snapshot of Top End life and ingenuity.

From here, we turn east onto the Kakadu Highway, officially entering one of Australia’s most culturally and environmentally significant landscapes. As the scenery shifts, escarpments rise and wetlands begin to appear, we pause at Bukbukluk Lookout for sweeping views that hint at the scale of Kakadu.

Depending on weather and track conditions, there may be an opportunity to be guided along the Yirmikmik Walks — a short but powerful introduction to the park’s monsoon forest, sandstone country and ancient connections to Country.

By mid to late afternoon, we arrive at Cooinda. Before settling in, we visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where stories of Bininj/Mungguy culture, law and daily life bring deeper meaning to everything you’ve seen throughout the day.

After hotel check-in and time to unwind, the day finishes on a high note with dinner at Mimi's Restaurant — relaxed Territory dining surrounded by the sounds of the bush as night settles over Kakadu.

Accommodation - Cooinda Lodge ensuite cabins

Catering included – Morning tea | snacks and cold water.

Breakfast (not included) - can be taken at the inhouse restaurant.

Lunch (not included) can be taken at locations during course of the day.

Dinner (not included) can be taken at Mimi’s Restaurant, Cooinda Lodge.

Day 3 - Yellow Water, Ancient Art & Escarpment Stories

The day begins before sunrise, when Kakadu is at its most alive and atmospheric. We head quietly onto the floodplains for the iconic Yellow Water Billabong sunrise cruise. As mist lifts from the water and the sky ignites with soft pinks and golds, saltwater crocodiles, buffalo, jabiru and birdlife emerge — a peaceful, powerful way to experience Kakadu waking up.

Back at Cooinda, we enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Mimi's Restaurant, sharing stories from the morning over good food and strong coffee.

For those wanting a bird’s-eye perspective, there’s an optional scenic flight with Kakadu Air. Choose a 30-minute or 60-minute flight to take in sweeping views of escarpments, winding rivers and vast wetlands — a humbling reminder of just how big and ancient this landscape really is.

Back on the ground, we visit one of Kakadu’s most significant cultural sites, Nourlangie Rock Art (Burrungkuy). Here, ancient rock art, shelters and lookout points tell stories of creation beings, daily life and survival, with your guide unpacking the deep cultural connections that continue today.

Before leaving the park, we stop at the Marrawuddi Gallery, a contemporary Aboriginal art space showcasing works from Kakadu and West Arnhem Land artists. It’s an opportunity to support local communities and take home a meaningful reminder of your time on Country.

From here, we begin the journey back to Darwin, carrying with us sunrise moments, ancient stories and a deeper understanding of why Kakadu is not just a destination — it’s a living, breathing cultural landscape.
